Garstal was for many years a member of King Broyan's bodyguard until he was wounded in a fight against chaos partially as a result of misplaced heroics. The chaos wound could not be properly healed leaving him partially lame and with a grudge against all chaos. This grudge has lead to the nickname "Chaos Crusher" for he is rarely satisfied with killing chaos, he will usually beat it into a bloody pulp and then burn it. In spite of the wound he continued to be a fearsome warrior so King Broyan put him in charge of the Volsaxi tribal fyrd and he has proved to be a capable trainer and organiser. Garstal is an initate of Starkval and has a place on the tribal ring.
At Whitewall he has been given charge of much of the routine of the siege - allocating guard duties, organising weapons and equipment, etc. He begrudges this sort of work but does it because no one else will. He gets on well with Scathach the Iron Shrew and they often agree a common position in advance of meetings.
He hasn't much time for heroes, particularly reckless ones. King Broyan alone gets excluded from this category because he's the king. This is based on the belief that stupid heroics cost lives and for the clan and tribe's safety the fyrd must be preserved. By comparison warriors and heroes are expendable.
