In the wake of the Evil Year, many Garanvuli (and other Heortlings) men left their steads and communities and sought freedom as rebels in the Wilds of Steal Forest (the forest which once covered most of the Heortland Plateau). Their leader was the bandit king Hendreik the Free, the great unconquered rebel. The rebels who followed Hendreik renounced stead and village, old ties and bonds. Their way was hard - constantly on the move, with no past and no future, and filled with constant danger and violence.

Hendreik brought together many godtalkers and magicians and taught them the screts of Larnste? (the god of Change) so that they could adapt to instability and keep their freedom. These magicians became the Larnsti Brotherhood). The Larnsti could not overthrow the Gbaji Empire, but they kept their freedom. Their freedom gave hope to the other Heortlings.

Hendreik and his followers helped Harmast, supported Arkat and made Owenrath High King of the Heortlings. Hendreik and his followers were granted the old Garanvuli lands and the Heortland Wilds by the OOO. The outlaws organized clans and became a tribe and, over several generations, adopted the ways of the village, stead, and clan. Their numbers grew and the Hendreiki cut down the Steal Woods and turned it into farmlands. The Hendreiki settled the central Heortland Plateau, founding settlements at Backford and Durengard, and bringing the Esvulari out of their isolation.

Protected by the Larnsti Brotherhood, the Hendreiki changed with time and constantly adapted to the instability around them. The outlaws and bandits became a tribe. As their numbers grew, they created new tribes - the Volsaxi to the north, the Jondalarings around Jansholm, and the Hurlant around Durengard, and so the Hendreiki became a confederation of tribes. The Hendreiki continually changed and adapted to change and the king became a High King.

When the Pharaoh came, the Hendreiki honored their ancient alliance with the OOO and King Andrin? fought against the Stranger. The Pharaoh killed High King Andrin, whereupon the Hendreiki distintegrated. The Pharaoh brought back King Andrin from the dead and the king changed the Hendreiki into Heortland. He apportioned Heortland in Marches and appointed Barons over them and four Earls to oversee the Barons. The Hendreiki were a people, Heortland is a place.

The Andrinic Heortlanders inhabit the densely populated Heortland Plateau and the coastal strips (where Pelaskite and Heortling cultures mix), whereas the traditionalists either packed up and migrated to Dragon Pass or found refuge in the rugged foothills and highlands of the Storm Mountains or in the rebellious Volsaxi.

The Sheriffs turned out to be not true Larnsti despite their magical training introduced by "Zombie King" Andrin, and the true Larnsti remained a brotherhood of migratory holy people.

When Hardrard the Green challenged the High King of Heortland and took up residence in Whitewall, the Volsaxi tribe truly became separate.
