Secrety Stuff
<Oliver>Such a cool topic it demanded its own page. I mean the Lunars have to spy on everyone, the Orlanthi, the surrounding areas, each other. Lots and lots of espionage ops.</Oliver>
We seem to have a page about someone called Amber who fits here? <Jane>
<tim> I have a NPC I have used in a couple of campaigns who is sub-chief Monitor for the Dragon Pass region, working for the Spoken Word. He might be useful in coordinating 'black ops'. Oh and he has a massive "Disdain Fazzur Wideread" score </tim>
I read in Carmanian Sources (I think?) that Carmanian Laws are Black (forbidden) or White (compulsory). So Black Ops would be forbidden in the eyes of Yanafal Tarnils followers who are after all the main driving force in the Red Army ie spying, assasination etc.<drfegg>
<Stu> That's a good idea! I hadn't considered anything along those lines yet; characters of his ilk sound fun. Any man who mocks the supposedly greatest general in the Empire (sub judice) and local commander is also fun to have around. The Entalathosium field intelligencers and operatives of the Hidden Path of the Spoken Word would be great additions to the cast (some also being good roles for players).
I'm up to my eyes at the moment (too many duck herobands... but, no, I don't mean for Whitewall), so I'm happy just dropping in odd ideas to see if Donald and peeps like the sound of them. Interestingly, reading Douglas Porch's work on the French intelligence services, the use of varying criminals, thugs and intelligence operatives against the OAS in the 1950s provides some useful (if little-known) ideas for brainstorming. Infiltrating the OAS underworld these Vietnamese, pieds noirs and otherwise Franco-Corsican barbouzes ('spooks', also known for their beards, grown by necessity for the sake of disguise... yay!) led a dangerous and rather horrid life. Worth a read if such things interest!
Douglas Porch, The French Intelligence Services (New York, 1995).
I also like the idea of a few operatives already in the area who have 'gone native', maybe setting themselves up as a sheep farmer and basket weaver, tattooed and moustachioed, and quite a surprise to the poor patrol that brings them into headquarters. Yonks back I was playing around with a Lunar Heroband, the Imperial Corps of Explorators, which constituted more a cross between uniformed exploring officers and brave, glory-seeking and clean-limbed sons of the Goddess than the organs of the Spoken Word.
'Going Native' was a big aspect of their character, with extravagant beards, curious tattoos and hundreds of Praxian bone-piercings in the line of duty being highly respected by their fellow comrades, and raising a toast in the mess. Thoughts of inclusion led to them greatly admiring the cultures they penetrated, especially the more 'Martial Races' (sorry...). It was mainly conceived after a sherry and watching The Four Feathers (the Korda version). The Corps was quite often in trouble, largely through some officers publishing their reports as memoirs before passing them onto the Ordenviru... </Stu>
<Oliver> Definitely! it's one of the fun bits about the Lunars that they have so many secret agencies. I imagine that as the siege goes on and things get worse and worse for the Lunars that all sorts of agents start dropping in and checking things out for the different agencies they work for. Even groups that don't normally leave Glamour. We could have Spoken Word ops, Blue Army agents, Black Army agents, Coreans, you name it. All spying on each other and getting in each other's way.
<Oliver>
<Joerg> This almost sounds like we have to add a unit "Lunar infiltrators" to the defenders... </Joerg>
<Oliver> Good suggestion. Broyan needs to keep watch on the Lunars too.</Oliver>
<Stu> I couldn't think of anywhere else to put this (sub judice), but it's kind of appropriate here. I got bored and decided to briefly investigate the Whitewall criminal underworld. I was horrified by what I found... </Stu>
