This is the place to record questions about Wiki Wiki or the site. And to answer them.

Q.

I've modified a few ugly links by copying the contents to new, sensibly named, pages. So there are now 'stray' pages, all junk, that aren't linked from anywhere. Does the system blat these eventually, or can the Admin? I'm aware we only have 5 Meg on this site.

<John>

A.

Add the list of the old ones to the Scheduled Deletions page and i'll take care of it. There are a couple of options if we run out of space, but i'll raise them if we get near the 5Mb limit.

Q.

Is there any way of setting up an image as a link? I can do links with titles, I can do images, but how do I combine the two?
<Jane>

Comment:

This is something of a style question. IMO this wiki is a development tool, not a representation engine. Links via images which aren't recognisable as such don't actually further our cause, do they? <Joerg>

Q.

I've mentioned this before: every time I load a new W-WW page or an editing window on my home setup - Win98/IE6 - I must refresh the screen manually or I get an old version of the page or an editing window that locks up on saving. So I've developed a 'Refresh' Habit. My office setup - XPpro/IE6 - is fine. I'm wondering if other people are having this problem, or even if they notice - only frequent updaters sense the latest versions of the site. We may have to publicise this a bit. 'F5, F5, F5'.

<John>

This is dependent on the settings of IE -

Tools/Internet Options/General/Temporary Internet Files/Settings

The default is automatically which uses some obscure Microsoft rules to determine whether to check for the page having changed. You'll also find that there is some ridiculous amount of disk space set aside for retaining copies of web pages viewed.

Q.

There are quite a few alternate spellings of names, events etc. - how are we going to deal with this?

Examples include Kangarl, Ses(t)arto etc. This leads to wrong links, superfluous pages, and general confusion.

<Joerg>

A.

It sounds like a Glossary is becoming a document we should develop in the near future - either as an external document or a wiki page. As well as correct spellings, this could also be an overview of locales, units and characters.

Does such tie in with the database project?

<John>

Definitely! I've talked to Jane about an input interface, but we postponed that project a little.

Meanwhile, I'll start a Glossary page both to collect entries and to link them to wiki pages.

<Joerg>

Q.

The RecentChanges page lists several out-of-date pages (which have probably been renamed and then deleted. Is there a way to avoid these zombies to be raised over and over again?

And: does it hurt if we edit RecentChanges manually? If so, that page ought to be closed, otherwise we could simply rename the zombies.

<Joerg>

Q.

Is there a page we can go to which lists every page of the Wiki?

<Nick>

A.

There is: RecentChanges records all changes, i.e. all pages. Do not click any question marks there!

<Joerg>

Q.

How can I get a Backup zip file for offline use of the data?

<Joerg>

Is there a downloadable zip or tar of the site for offline browsing? I would be surprised if Wiki Wiki didn't have some kind of feature like this available.

<Phil Hibbs>

A.

There's an PhpWikiAdministration page that seems to have such a facility. Though the link just seems to return me to the HomePage :(

<Jane>

Q.

I'm Canadian and therefore have a reputation for politeness to keep up. Would you all mind utterly if I spun the Siege of Karse and some Karse info off here? Since it looks like Joerg and I are going to hammer a bunch of ideas out on the HQ-rpg list, I thought it might be worth bringing them here.

<LC>

Sounds like an excellent idea to me. We just need to be sure the rest of the site links to it properly.

<Jane>

Note that I've seeded another wiki for discussing Karse in detail beyond the scope of this list:

http://www.seedwiki.com/page.cfm?doc=City%20of%20Karse&wikiid=7069&wpid=

No idea whether that works for people without an account, though.

<Joerg>

Yes it does, I can access the Karse pages but some links like Rules of this Wiki and Q & A page respond with Bad Request. <Donald>

I tested before linking. I don't have an account, and it all works fine for me, including the links Donald mentions above. <Jane>

Looks like it's a browser specific issue, works fine with IE 5 but not with Netscape 3. <Donald>
